Sewer and Septic Service in a Growing Mt. Juliet

Mt. Juliet sits in western Wilson County, about 17 miles east of downtown Nashville. It lies between Old Hickory Lake to the north and Percy Priest Lake to the south. The 2020 Census counted 39,289 people, and Mt. Juliet is the largest city in Wilson County. Its charter spells the name Mt. Juliet, while the Postal Service lists it as Mount Juliet.

Mt. Juliet was incorporated as a city in 1972. Recent annexations and a land swap with the City of Lebanon have grown the city to about 21.78 square miles.

Interstate 40 and US 70, called Lebanon Road, run east and west through the city. State Route 171, Mt. Juliet Road, runs north and south between them. Wherever your home sits, the system it drains to decides who you call first when a drain backs up.

Mt. Juliet City Sewer: Drain Cleaning and Sewer Line Repair

Inside the city, the Sewer Maintenance Division of Public Works keeps up Mt. Juliet's sanitary sewer. The City describes two kinds of sewer line. A gravity line relies on gravity to push sewage to the main line. On a pressure line, a grinder pump at the house forces sewage to the main line.

The City asks residents to call its Sewer Department about a sewage backup or a sewer odor. The same goes for a flashing red light at the sewer grinder on your house. So a grinder alarm on the city sewer goes to the City. The division checks city lines with closed-circuit TV equipment and smoke testing.

Our work for city sewer homes is on the house side. Hydro jetting clears grease and buildup out of kitchen lines and main lines. The City's own pretreatment FAQ warns that warm grease hardens as it cools and can block the line.

A sewer camera inspection shows the inside of your home's line before anyone digs. If the camera finds a break, sewer line repair replaces the bad section. Our crew does its own digging, and we saw and patch the asphalt where a line crosses a road.

STEP Systems and Outfall Lines in Wilson County

Some Wilson County homes are on a third kind of system. The Water and Wastewater Authority of Wilson County provides decentralized sewer service to homes and small businesses. It serves customers the cities' sewers do not reach, typically in small to mid-size developments in the county. Wilson County's codes office points STEP systems to the Authority.

The Authority and its maintenance partner generally handle the parts outside the outfall line from your home. That outfall line and the plumbing inside the house are the homeowner's. We clear and repair that line, along with clogged drains and toilets inside the house. For anything past the outfall line, call the Authority.

Septic Tanks, Drain Fields and State Permits Around Mt. Juliet

Homes off both the city sewer and the STEP systems use their own septic tank and drain field. Wilson County has a large concentration of cedar glades, where the soil is too rocky or shallow for trees. Gladeville, about 10 miles southeast of Mt. Juliet, takes its name from the cedar glades around it. Ground like that is one more reason every new or repaired system starts with the state permit.

The Wilson County codes office does not permit or inspect septic systems. A new septic system needs the state's Septic System Construction Permit, and so does a repair to a faulty system. The repair permit has no fee, and the repair construction inspection costs $100. Processing can take up to 45 days from a complete application, so start early.

The property owner gets the permit, and we install or repair the system to its approved design. For new builds and replacements, septic tank installation means a precast concrete tank set with a boom truck. A failed or saturated field gets drain field repair with new gravel and fabric trenches. On a septic system, septic repair covers pumps, floats, alarms, baffles and broken lines.

The EPA says household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Our septic tank pumping service pumps the tank, checks it and notes anything that needs attention. Buying a home outside the city? A septic inspection shows how the tank and field are doing before you close.

Mt. Juliet FAQ

Questions From Mt. Juliet Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Mt. Juliet. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (629) 285-6381

Who do I call about a grinder pump alarm in Mt. Juliet?
On the city sewer, call the City's Sewer Department. The City asks residents to call when the red light is flashing at the sewer grinder on the house. It wants the same call for a sewage backup or a sewer odor. Slow drains and kitchen lines that keep clogging are drain cleaning jobs, and those are ours.
How can I tell if my Mt. Juliet home is on city sewer, STEP or septic?
Ask the City's Sewer Department or the Water and Wastewater Authority of Wilson County about your address. A home that neither one serves usually has its own septic tank and drain field. A septic inspection then shows how that system is doing.
Who handles a STEP system in Wilson County?
Call the Water and Wastewater Authority of Wilson County about the parts outside the outfall line from your home. The Authority and its maintenance partner generally handle those parts. The outfall line and the plumbing within the house are the homeowner's, and we can work on both. Call or text (629) 285-6381 about a clog there.
Who issues septic permits for homes around Mt. Juliet?
The state does. Wilson County's codes office does not permit or inspect septic systems. A new system and a repair to a faulty one both need the state's Septic System Construction Permit. The property owner gets that permit, and the repair permit has no fee.
Do you serve Mt. Juliet from Greenbrier?
Yes, Mt. Juliet is in our service area, and our crew works out of Greenbrier, in Robertson County. Interstate 40 and US 70 cross the city from west to east, and Lebanon is the next city east. Call or text (629) 285-6381 and tell us where the property is. The estimate is free.
